Description of the attraction

Melnik Pyramids is a natural landmark of Melnik, located not far from the resort itself. The pyramids in Melnik are considered one of the most interesting places in Bulgaria. In 1960, the pyramids were officially declared a unique natural landmark.

The Melnik pyramids are rocky formations with a total area of 50 sq.m. They are named so due to their whiteness, which is often compared to chalk (it is precisely because of the unique mountain formations that the city was named Melnik). They are conventionally divided into Melnik, Rozhen and Kyrlanos pyramids, depending on the place of origin.

Geologists believe that the current appearance of the pyramid was acquired due to erosion of clay soil. In addition, the process of forming the pyramids is not complete - they change their shape and appearance a little every year. Today there are pyramids resembling mushrooms, minarets, haystacks, alpine peaks, obelisks, swords, Gothic temples and the pyramids themselves.

Near the village of Kyrlanovo in the Blagoevgrad region, there are four pyramids of particular interest. They resemble one-hundred-meter obelisks with steep slopes, the inaccessible peaks of which are covered with grassy vegetation. Not far from the village of Rozhen you can see more than a thousand so-called pyramids - large and small rock mushrooms.

All information about these amazing formations is located in a special center of the city of Melnik, which is dedicated to the study of unique geological rocks.
