Description of the attraction

The Drama Theater of the Capuchins is the oldest theater in the city of Luxembourg. The theater is located in the very heart of the old city on Teatralnaya Square in a beautiful old mansion from the 17th century and is perhaps one of the best places for cultural leisure in Luxembourg.

The building was built in 1623 and was a monastery for Capuchin monks until 1795. After Luxembourg was occupied by the French, the building was used as a powder warehouse, then as a food warehouse, and subsequently a military garrison's bakery was located here.

In 1867, the building was transferred to the jurisdiction of the city authorities, and already in 1869 the first Luxembourg City Theater was opened in the old monastery, which for a long time remained the only one in the city.

In the fall of 1959, construction began on a new spacious building for the Luxembourg City Theater. Its grand opening took place in April 1964. The building of the old theater was repaired and it became the home of the City Drama Theater. In 1995, as a memory of the fact that Capuchin monks once lived here, the drama theater received its current name - the Theater of the Capuchins.

The theater's repertoire is extensive and varied. On average, each season, the Capuchin Theater offers its audience about ten of its own performances in Luxembourgish, German and French. The theater also regularly hosts troupes of various European theaters on tour (as a rule, performances are performed in the original language).
