Description of the attraction
Wolfsberg is a city located in the south of Austria, in the province of Carinthia, which is the capital of the district of the same name. It is located above the Lavant River, a tributary of the Drava. It is home to about 25 thousand people. Wolfsberg is the third largest city in the state of Carinthia.
The sights of the city include the old town houses built on the main square, mainly in the 16th-17th centuries and preserved to our time almost unchanged. There is also a castle in the town, erected in 1178, but after that it was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. In 1846, Count Hugo I Henkel von Donnersmarck restored this abandoned historic mansion, designed by the Viennese architect Johann Romano. Currently, Wolfsberg Castle has been rebuilt in the Gothic style. It is used as a cultural center where temporary exhibitions are often held. Having visited such an exhibition, you can partially see the castle. Another local castle, Bayerhofen, dates from the second half of the 16th century.
One of the oldest architectural monuments in the city is the parish church of St. Mark. It was built in the late Romanesque style in the 13th century and was first mentioned in the annals of 1216. Around 1240, a Romanesque portal was built in the temple, which was later decorated with Gothic and early Baroque elements. The chapel of St. Anne, which was built by the bakers' guild, is also interesting, therefore it is often called the temple of bakers.
Outside the city, you can find the palaces of Zilberberg, built in the 16th century, and Reideben built in 1550, as well as the picturesque ruins of the castle of Mushem.
