Description of the attraction

Cyprus has always attracted tourists from all over the world with its beautiful beaches, warm sea and beautiful landscapes. The landscape diversity of the island has contributed to the fact that a huge number of plant species grow on its territory, which can be admired throughout the year. It is this species diversity that prompted the Forestry Department of the Republic to create a botanical station "Herbarium of Northern Cyprus". It was founded in 1989 and is located in a mountainous area about 18 kilometers south of the city of Girne (Kyrenia) near the village of Alevkaya.

The Herbarium of Northern Cyprus was created to store the collection that the British botanist Derek Viney began to collect. Today, the unique collection of the station numbers more than 1, 5 thousand samples of grasses, shrubs and trees that grow on the territory of the northern part of the island. In addition, 19 plant species represented in the collection are endemic - in the wild, they can be found exclusively in the north of Cyprus.

So, in the "Herbaria" you can see several types of pines, olive and carob trees, many varieties of citrus fruits, cedar, juniper, cypress, a large number of various orchids, which grow on the island about 45 species (in the north of Cyprus - more than 30).

In addition to dried samples of local flora, the exposition is presented with photographs, drawings and sketches of various plants. Each instance has a detailed description.

Also, a beautiful view of the mountain plateau opens from the territory of the station.
