The modern heraldic symbols of some Russian cities were not immediately put into effect. For example, the coat of arms of Surgut caused doubts, disputes both among local authorities and in the Heraldic Council. There was a proposal to preserve the historical coat of arms of the city unchanged, but the deputies demanded new elements that reveal the current life of the region.

Description of the coat of arms of modern Surgut

The official symbol of the Siberian city was approved by the local Duma in 2003, in addition, it is registered under No. 1207 in the Heraldic Register of Russia. Any photo of the coat of arms of Surgut evokes a positive assessment from aesthetes, since as a result the image turned out to be quite bright, but laconic.

Most of the elements suggested by the artist were rejected. As a result, there is only one main character on the heraldic symbol of the city - a black-and-brown fox. The image turned out to be realistic, black and silver were chosen for the color of the fur, popular heraldic colors, with black being the main one, silver is present in the drawing of small details, for example, ears and a white tassel on the tail.

For the shield, the French form was chosen, which is not surprising, since the overwhelming majority of Russian administrative-territorial entities have this form. The shield is divided into two unequal fields, painted in gold and azure tones.

Historical heraldic symbol

An important event took place in March 1785, then, together with other cities of the Tobolsk governorship, Surgut received its first coat of arms. The following elements were depicted on the city heraldic symbol: in the upper field of the shield - the Tobolsk coat of arms; in the lower field - a black-brown fox. The main meaning of this element is to emphasize the abundance of beautiful animals that live in these places.

The history of Surgut has made sharp turns and bends more than once. For example, from 1804 to 1867, this settlement lost its city status, and accordingly, it was deprived of heraldic symbols. In 1898, it again becomes a city, and the center of the county, and in 1926 another reorganization turns it into a village.

True, during the years of Soviet power, not only Surgut, but also many other cities did not have their own official symbols. The return of historical coats of arms and the introduction of new symbols began only in the 1990s. Surgut receives a coat of arms, the authors of which tried to combine the past and the future of the city. In the lower part there was an image of the already familiar, beautiful predator, in the upper part there was an oil rig, emphasizing the importance of the oil industry for the region.
